Why ‘Making Things Pretty’ Is the Worst Mistake in UI/UX Design

If you’ve tried to explain what you do as a UI/UX designer at a family gathering, you’ve probably heard replies like, “So you make websites look pretty?” such as “Oh, you’re the one who moves the buttons around?”

Myths around UI/UX design often confuse not just clients, but even new professionals in the area. They can result in wrong expectations, poor designs, and dissatisfaction.

Myth 1: “UI and UX Are the Same”

Imagine walking into a beautifully furnished restaurant (UI) only to find that the menu is confusing, the service is inefficient, and the food tastes bad (UX).

UI (User Interface) focuses on visuals, such as buttons, colors, typography, and layout, whereas UX (User Experience) focuses on the user’s journey and feelings while exploring the product.

They’re like two sides of the same coin, working together but with different responsibilities.
